Growing Healthy Soil for Healthy Communities - Moving Forward
Overall Goal: The desired long-term effect is increased community and
public health capacity to implement safe residential gardening practices, and
reduce soil lead concentrations as part of a transformational community
development strategy.
Objective #1: Best Practices in safe urban gardening will be informed by results from community-engaged research which tests the effectiveness of soil and landscape interventions implemented in two Milwaukee neighborhoods.
Objective #2: Environmental health literacy workshops will increase knowledge and intentions to practice safe gardening and engage in lead poisoning prevention action, including soil testing.
Objective #3: Stakeholders (Policy Professionals, Urban Gardening Institutions, and Urban Gardeners) will have increased understanding of the implications of the existing policies and institutional procedures surrounding urban residential gardening and will commit to engagement in further policy formation and advancement to mitigate health risks associated with backyard gardening.
